The Hooding Ceremony is the celebration of the success of its graduates, honoring the accomplishments of our students, who have dedicated themselves to academic pursuits and giving back to society. Ceremonies like this and the commencement ceremony provide the unique opportunity to celebrate our students, our faculty, and in particular, their collaborative accomplishments.

The Hooding Ceremony is a Master's degree candidate-only event that signifies the student's successful completion of their graduate program as a faculty member invests their hood over them. This is in addition to the Commencement ceremony, but also features faculty in full academic regalia. During the ceremony, each candidate's thesis director is announced, and the faculty member of the student's choice with a representative from the Graduate College, places the masters hood over the head of the masters candidate, signifying successful completion of the masters degree and full membership in the community of scholars. 2020 Hooding Ceremony. The Spring 2020 Master's Hooding Ceremony will be held on Monday, April, 20, 2020. There will be two ceremonies. The first ceremony, for students graduating from programs in the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Hooding ceremonies are for students graduating with a master’s degree.

The hooding ceremony is a special recognition for students earning master’s degrees. The placing of the hood signifies the passage from student to “master” and recognizes the scholarly and personal achievements of the candidates for graduation who have completed their advanced degree requirements.

This ceremony will integrate the conferring of degrees into the existing hooding ceremony to create one Commencement event for graduate students. This ceremony is intended to celebrate the successful completion of all Master’s and Education Specialist (EdS) degrees. A reception will follow the event. Hooding and Commencement. We are happy to share that all graduate students who have received or will receive a Ph.D. or final master’s degree during the current 2020-21 academic year are invited to attend the University’s in-person Commencement and will be permitted to invite a maximum of two guests.

This ceremony officially confers upon you the academic hood, an item of academic regalia that symbolizes the high degree of scholarship one has attained with the completion of a Masters degree. All graduate students (master’s, educational specialist, and doctoral) will participate in a combined commencement ceremony. The UAB Graduate School Doctoral Hooding Ceremony and Master's Student Commencement is held the Friday evening preceding the Saturday undergraduate ceremony.
